Gen Z, Digital Identity, and Self-Determination
Most trend forecasting in 2021 was focused on the aesthetic shift toward comfort and casualness post-pandemic. I wanted to look at something structurally different: the behavioral shift toward individuality and autonomy. Why were young consumers investing in digital goods? Why were microtrends accelerating while macro trends fragmented? The answer, I thought, was in the psychology of control.
Pulled from cultural analysis, emerging platform behavior — Roblox skins, NFT fashion drops, TikTok microtrends — and consumer psychology research on autonomy and self-expression. The forecast identified privacy, control, and self-authorship as the core drivers, not aesthetics, and traced how those drivers were manifesting in both digital and physical product choices.
- Repositioned the trend around behavioral drivers rather than visual ones
- Connected metaverse activity, NFT fashion, and physical styling choices to a single underlying need for self-determination
- Forecast proved directionally accurate — the following two years saw significant investment in digital fashion and deeply individualized product lines
Trends are behavioral before they're visual
The mistake most forecasters make is chasing the aesthetic. The signal is always in the behavior underneath it. What are people doing, and why? The visual follows from that answer — not the other way around.
